El Desayuno is a Bay Area band, fusing Latin Jazz with Soul and Salsa. The group crosses cultural and musical borders, sparking high energy jams, intricate percussion and vibrant vocals.
Think Poncho Sanchez, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Bosch, Darryl Hall and Carlos Santana...all in the same band, and that’s sort of what El Desayuno sounds like. Ok we aren't as good as them, but you get the idea. The band consists of some of the Bay Area’s finest and longest running musicians. Michael Cerda plays bass, sings and composes original material, Jamie Dubberly plays trombone and composes original material, Marty Vasquez, Alberto and Anthony Torres, and David Solis play percussion, , Ben Dean plays keys, Bobby Knight plays guitar and quattro, Cory Wright plays sax and flute, and Rolf Johnson plays trumpet.
The band formed by accident in 2006, and from winery to night club to street festival to private party, the band has not let a crowd down since. Much of the music is improvisational, so each night is a little different. The band plays songs by Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri, Cachao and a cunning array of original compositions, descargas and all out jams.
El Desayuno is currently booking shows throughout 2011, in support of its anticipated 3rd CD, recorded live at Armando's in Martinez, CA.
